Feedback

Why are evaluations important?

By evaluating a training program after it is finished, the trainer is able to see if they accomplished their objectives, as well as how the client and participants felt when they left the training session.

These things are important for the trainer to know so that they can continue to improve (1) their training materials, (2) their training session, and (3) their training persona.

Training is always a learning process for all involved, and by receiving feedback on a session, the trainer is able to continue their process after the session has ended.

Who evaluated us?

Our Client

Our client, Amanda Bomfim of TCFRH, evaluated our training session for many things, including how much she felt we helped her non-profit clients, our professionalism, and the future usability of the training. She rated us using an ordinal ("strongly agree" to "disagree") scale, as well as answering short questions about our performance.

Overall, she rated our training extremely highly and seemed appreciative of our work. She believed we did a great job leading the training and was excited to have JMU Communication Training students back in the future.

She said of the participants' experience:

"The participants walked away with tangible skills and materials that they will use throughout the year...I expect the nonprofits to be more comfortable using Instagram and Twitter. I expect to see more nonprofits opening accounts with these social media platforms,"

And of her own opinion:

"I have enjoyed working with this group of students not only for the reasons aforementioned but also because they genuinely cared about the work that we do...I absolutely would be willing to work with student trainers again from the Communication Training class."

We are thankful that we were able to help Amanda and the non-profits of TCFRH, and we hope they are able to carry this experience into their future social media experience.

Our Participants

We had 22 people attend our training session and received 5 evaluations back from participants. This means we heard back from 23% of the total people who attended the training via these formal evaluation sheets. However, our client Amanda also said she conversed with many of the training participants after the session as well as at future meetings. Hopefully, from this amount of information, we can generalize about the experience of our training attendees.

From Amanda's evaluation of our work, she had this to say about the participants' opinion:

"Immediately following the training, participants gave me encouraging and positive feedback about the training. The participants and I discussed the training at the following meeting as well. There was positive feedback given at that meeting also. They told me that the facilitators were engaging and the information was new and refreshing compared to past social media training sessions."

Additionally, we can look at the 5 official evaluation forms which were sent back to us via Amanda. These used an ordinal ("strongly agree" to "disagree") scale to evaluate us, as well as additional short answer questions. These were filled out anonymously.

The forms mostly give us good reviews, with most marks in the "strongly agree" or "somewhat agree" columns of the scale. Only 4 of the 5 evaluations answered the short answer sections, but these were mostly positive as well. Future comments that stand out include:

  • "The class is definitely helpful for people who don’t know much or anything about social media."

  •  "The training took much longer than I expected. I recommend keeping it to an hour."

  •  "...it might have been even more helpful if they had then done a real-world review/critique of one organization’s social media feeds."

  • "They did a great job and were sensitive to the different skill levels. They were patient when answering the questions and listened for the questions that were not always clear."

  • "Twitter finally clicked for me."

This mixture of evaluation comments shows us that while we had great reviews in many areas and people enjoyed the training, there is still room for improvement.

Using the information from these evaluations, we would like to continue to improve our training so it is

clear, for the right audience, welcoming, and actionable for the participants.
